Lombok's Untamed Southern Coast
South Lombok is what Bali's south coast looked like before the crowds arrived. A long, reef-broken shoreline sweeps between limestone headlands, concealing a sequence of bays so perfect they feel invented, white sand giving way to water that shifts from pale jade to deep sapphire within a single cove. The region centres on Kuta Lombok, a small town that has grown just enough to offer excellent restaurants, surf schools, and a laid-back social scene, without losing the quiet that makes this place worth coming to. It is also Lombok's surf capital, with world class breaks at Gerupuk, Ekas, Mawi, and Tanjung Aan drawing surfers from across the globe.
From Kuta, a single coast road threads east and west to connect beaches each with its own distinct character: the crescent sweep of Selong Belanak, the sheltered horseshoe of Mawun, the sculpted double bay of Tanjung Aan. Six Bays Worth Knowing
The beaches of South Lombok line the coast between Belong in the west and Ekas in the east, each separated by the kind of headland that would be a destination in itself anywhere else.

Tanjung Aan
10 MIN EAST OF KUTA · ALL LEVELS
The signature beach of South Lombok: a double-bay arc of blinding white sand, pepper-grain in texture in one half and fine powder in the other, enclosed by volcanic headlands. The water is calm enough for swimming on most days, clear enough to see the sand below in three metres. A beach club now sits at the back of the bay; the headland walk above takes twenty minutes and offers the best panoramic view in the region.

Kuta Lombok
TOWN BEACH · HUB & BASE
Kuta's own beach is wider and more exposed than the sheltered bays nearby, and the surf here catches the full swell. It works best as a base rather than a destination: wade in at the eastern end where it's calmer, or watch the waves from one of the seafront warungs. The real value is proximity, with all other south coast beaches within 30 minutes by scooter.

Selong Belanak
30MIN WEST OF KUTA ·BEGINNER SURF
A long, shallow, crescent shaped bay backed by green rice fields and low hills. The gentle gradient makes it one of the finest beginner surf beaches in Indonesia, with consistent, chest high waves breaking far from shore over a sandy bottom. Multiple surf schools operate from the beach. In the afternoon, the light turns golden and the hillside reflections in the bay make for extraordinary photographs. One of South Lombok's unmissable stops.

Mawun Beach
20MIN WEST OF KUTA · STANDOUT BEACH
Mawun is one of South Lombok's most beautiful beaches, full stop. A perfect horseshoe of white sand enclosed by steep green hills on three sides, the bay is completely sheltered from the wind, which keeps the water calm, clear, and an extraordinary shade of turquoise. Swimming here is superb. The enclosed geography creates an almost theatrical stillness, and the surrounding hills give it a scale that makes it feel like a private cove even when it isn't. Do not skip Mawun.

Torok Beach
12 MIN FROM SELONG BELANAK · SECLUDED
Torok sits just beyond Selong Belanak, continuing west away from Kuta, and sees a fraction of its neighbour's visitors. A wide arc of pale sand backed by low dunes and coconut palms, it has the feel of a beach from a decade ago, quiet, uncluttered, and genuinely relaxed. The water is clear and good for swimming in calm conditions. Add it as an extension to a Selong Belanak run rather than a standalone trip.

Are Guling
15 MIN WEST OF KUTA · SURF & SECLUSION
Are Guling is a quiet bay a short drive west of Kuta, just before Mawun. It sees far fewer people than its neighbors, with pale sand, clear water and green hills behind it, and surfers head out for the left-hander offshore. Combine it with Mawun on the same trip.

What to Do in South Lombok

The long, sandy-bottomed bay is among Indonesia's best beginner breaks. Lessons run all morning from the beach. Most schools include board hire and safety guidance.

Scooter the Coast Road
Rent a scooter in Kuta and head east to Tanjung Aan, then beyond to the quieter fishing villages. The road hugs the coast with headland views at every turn.

Snorkel the Rocky Points
The headlands between Tanjung Aan's twin bays shelter thriving reef. Bring your own mask and fins, no guide or boat needed. Turtles are common sightings here.

Gerupuk is a short boat ride from Kuta, offering multiple breaks for all levels inside a sheltered bay. Ekas, further east, is a more remote set-up with a long right-hander that draws more intermediate to experienced surfers from around the world. Both are essential stops on the south Lombok surf circuit.

The traditional Sasak village of Sade sits 20 minutes north of Kuta. Conical thatched rice barns, handwoven cloth demonstrations, and the chance to speak with local families.

Hike the Aan Headland
A short but steep trail climbs the headland above Tanjung Aan. From the top, both bays spread out below, arguably the best single view on Lombok's entire south coast.
GETTING THERE
How to Reach South Lombok
South Lombok is served by Lombok International Airport (LOP), which receives direct flights from Bali, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. From the airport, Kuta is the natural gateway to the south coast.
FROM BALI
Direct flights from Denpasar (DPS) to Lombok (LOP) take around 30 minutes. Multiple daily departures with Lion Air, Garuda, and Batik Air. Book in advance in peak season.
AIRPORT TO KUTA
Official metered taxis and app based Grab cars operate from the airport but may not drive to some areas. Pre book a transfer through your accommodation for the simplest option. The road is straightforward.
FERRY FROM BALI
A slower but scenic alternative: the Padangbai to Lembar ferry takes around 4 to 5 hours. From Lembar port, Kuta is a further 1.5 hours by car. Best combined with a multi day trip.
GETTING AROUND
Scooter hire in Kuta costs around IDR 70,000 to 90,000 per day. It’s by far the best way to explore the coast. Grab works around Mataram & Senggigi; for remote beaches, two wheels are essential.

Tips Before You Go

Come in the dry season. April through October brings consistent sunshine, calm seas, and reliable surf. The wet season (November to March) can bring days of rain and rough water, and some remote beach tracks become impassable.

Bring cash to Kuta. ATMs exist in Kuta but can run out or go offline. Stock up in Mataram or at the airport before heading south, as remote beaches have no facilities whatsoever.

Respect the surf. Mawi carries genuine power and is for experienced surfers only when swell is big. Gerupuk has breaks for every level. At Ekas, Inside Ekas suits beginners and intermediates, while Outside Ekas is for experienced surfers.. If you’re learning, stay at Selong Belanak. Rips form quickly on exposed beaches, so watch the locals before entering.

Dress modestly in villages. Lombok is a predominantly Muslim island. A sarong in your bag costs nothing and shows respect when walking through Sasak villages or visiting local markets.

Sunrise over Tanjung Aan is worth the early start. The bays are entirely empty before 7am. The light is extraordinary. Bring coffee from your accommodation and watch the fishermen head out.
