Your complete insider guide to the best dive sites, snorkeling spots, marine life, and how to plan your underwater adventure in one of Indonesia's most rewarding marine destinations.
Lombok is one of Southeast Asia's most underrated marine destinations. Warm water year round, thriving coral reefs, secret island archipelagos, and a ring of small islands make it ideal for snorkelers and divers of every level. Whether you want a relaxed float over shallow coral gardens, your first breath underwater, or an adrenaline-charged dive with hammerhead sharks in the Indian Ocean, Lombok delivers.
This guide covers everything: the best dive sites and snorkeling spots across the island, difficulty levels, marine life, the best time to go, what to expect underwater, and how to find a dive operator you can trust.

Why Lombok and the Gili Islands Are Special
The waters surrounding Lombok sit within the Coral Triangle, one of the most biodiverse marine regions on the planet. This means divers and snorkelers encounter a remarkable variety of ecosystems in a relatively small geographic area.
What makes this region stand out:
Warm tropical water year round, typically 27 to 30 degrees Celsius
Visibility that often exceeds 20 meters
Healthy coral reefs alongside active restoration projects
Diverse environments including reef slopes, walls, wrecks, pinnacles, and drift dives
Minimal crowds compared to Bali's dive sites
Coverage from north to south - the Gili Islands, Senggigi, Kuta Lombok, Pink Beach, and Belongas Bay all within reach of a single operator
Lombok also has something Bali cannot match at the southern end: Belongas Bay, home to The Magnet and The Cathedral, two of Indonesia's most dramatic advanced dive sites and the best place in the region to encounter schooling hammerhead sharks.

Diving and snorkeling are possible year round around Lombok.
Top Dive Sites Around the Gili Islands
The Gili Islands sit just off the northwest coast of Lombok and offer some of the most accessible and rewarding diving in the region. Sites range from shallow beginner reefs to deeper pinnacles and drift dives.
Shark Point
Located off the northwest coast of Gili Trawangan, Shark Point is one of the most famous sites in the region. Coral bommies and deeper sections regularly produce sightings of blacktip and whitetip reef sharks. Green sea turtles are frequently spotted resting in the shallows.
Advanced divers can also visit the Glen Nusa wreck, a tugboat intentionally sunk in 2016 that has developed into a thriving artificial reef.
Turtle Heaven
North of Gili Meno, Turtle Heaven lives up to its name. A coral pinnacle rises to around ten metres, with deeper sections reaching thirty-five metres. Green and hawksbill turtles are the headline attraction, but the site also rewards patient divers with nudibranchs, pipefish, and frogfish tucked into the coral.
Manta Point
Off the southern coast of Gili Trawangan, Manta Point sits between ten and fifteen metres above striking cabbage coral formations. Manta rays, eagle rays, and reef sharks are the draw, alongside schools of sweetlips, snappers, and fusiliers moving through the current.
Deep Turbo
North of Gili Trawangan, Deep Turbo drops to between eighteen and thirty metres through dramatic underwater pinnacles and blue water drop-offs. Barrel sponges, soft corals, reef sharks, stingrays, and nudibranchs reward divers who make the descent.
Bounty Wreck
Off the west coast of Gili Meno, the Bounty Wreck is a sunken jetty that collapsed during a storm in 1999 and has since transformed into an artificial reef. At ten to sixteen metres, it is accessible for most experience levels. Scorpionfish, schooling fish, and coral growth now cover the structure.
Meno Wall and Meno Slope
Near Gili Meno, these coral walls and reef slopes are home to moray eels, scorpionfish, pipefish, and nudibranchs. They are particularly popular for night dives, when decorator crabs, squid, shrimp, and other nocturnal species come out.
Halik Reef
North of Gili Trawangan, Halik Reef is a popular drift dive featuring large coral bommies and antler coral formations. Turtles, moray eels, reef octopus, and blacktip reef sharks move along the reef on strong current days.
Secret Reef and Simon's Reef
Located between Gili Air and Gili Meno, these offshore sites feature dramatic pinnacles and large gorgonian sea fans. Depths can reach thirty-five metres and beyond, making them better suited for experienced divers.
Coral Basket and Bio Rock
These sites showcase active coral restoration work around the Gili Islands. Artificial reef structures have been in place long enough to become thriving habitats for fish, macro life, and juvenile reef species. A reminder of how quickly reefs can recover with the right support.
Hans Reef
Near Gili Air, Hans Reef features a coral pinnacle surrounded by sandy seabed attracting snake eels, flounder, cuttlefish, and juvenile reef fish. Turtles are a reliable sighting.
Seahorse Bay
Along the west coast of Lombok, Seahorse Bay is a muck diving favourite. The sandy seabed hides painted frogfish, decorator crabs, pipefish, coconut octopus, and on a lucky day, seahorses. Best experienced as a night dive.
South Lombok Diving: Belongas Bay
For experienced divers, Belongas Bay on the south coast of Lombok is in a different category entirely. Remote, raw, and largely uncrowded, this is where Lombok's diving reaches its peak intensity.
The Magnet
A deep pinnacle rising from the ocean floor, The Magnet is best known for schooling hammerhead sharks, typically encountered between July and September. Strong currents, significant depths, and pelagic encounters make this a site for advanced divers with a minimum Advanced certification and at least fifty logged dives. Not a site to attempt with an inexperienced operator.
The Cathedral
Steep walls, dramatic swim-throughs, and regular sightings of eagle rays, tuna, and barracuda. The Cathedral sits alongside The Magnet as one of Lombok's most spectacular dives and demands the same level of experience and operator quality.
Both sites are accessible from Kuta Lombok with the right operator. Dive days to Belongas are approximately seven hours including boat and car transfers.
East Lombok: Pink Beach
Pink Beach (Tangsi Beach) on Lombok's east coast is one of Indonesia's most distinctive dive and snorkel destinations. The rose-tinted sand is striking above water; below it, colorful coral gardens extend right from the shoreline. Suitable for snorkelers and divers of most experience levels, and less visited than the Gili Island sites.
Combine with island hopping to Gili Petelu and nearby coves for a full day on the water.

Best Snorkeling Spots in Lombok
The Gili Islands
Gili Meno is the standout snorkeling island. Turtle Point is one of the easiest places in Indonesia to swim alongside sea turtles, and the shallow reef off the beach is ideal for beginners. The famous underwater statues here make for extraordinary photography.
Gili Air offers coral walls close to shore that can be reached directly from the beach without a boat. Great for families and half-day snorkeling trips.
Gili Trawangan has excellent coral, particularly in the early morning before boat traffic increases. Better suited to confident snorkelers who want more variety and deeper drop-offs.

Sekotong and the Secret Gilis
A quiet archipelago on Lombok's southwest coast. Calm bays, crystal clear water, and healthy coral make this one of the most underrated snorkeling areas on the island.
Gili Nanggu is ideal for beginners and families, calm conditions, clownfish, sea stars, and soft coral.
Gili Sudak is commonly combined with Nanggu on island hopping trips.
Gili Kedis, one of Indonesia's smallest islands, can be circumnavigated in minutes and is perfect for underwater photography.
Gili Asahan and the Southwest Islands
A more boutique alternative to the main Gili cluster. Eco lodges, very calm conditions, minimal tourist traffic, and snorkeling over seagrass meadows and coral slopes. Turtles, rays, and reef fish are all regular sightings.

North Lombok Coast
Around Sire Beach and Nipah Beach, calm conditions in the dry season produce good beach-access snorkeling in shallow, clear water.
Marine Life You Can Expect to See
The reefs around Lombok and the Gili Islands support extraordinary marine biodiversity.
Even beginner snorkel sites consistently produce turtle sightings.
Marine life encounters in Lombok range from schooling reef fish and close-up reef photography to sea turtles gliding along the coral slope
Choosing a Dive Operator
The quality of your experience underwater depends significantly on who you dive with. In Lombok, this matters more than in some destinations because the range of sites, from shallow Gili reefs to Belongas Bay's advanced pinnacles, requires operators with genuine island-wide reach and the safety standards to match.
