If Bali is the headline act, Lombok is the secret stage where surfers still whisper about uncrowded waves. Just across the Lombok Strait, this rugged island delivers everything from playful warm-up waves to heavy, hollow reef breaks and world-class left-hand barrels that draw experienced surfers from around the globe.
With warm water year-round, consistent Indian Ocean swell, and far fewer bodies in the lineup, surfing Lombok feels refreshingly raw. Sessions here revolve around tides, swell direction, and timing rather than crowds and competition. Whether you're dialling in your rhythm at reef breaks around Gerupuk or chasing perfection at Desert Point, Lombok rewards surfers who come prepared and respect the ocean.
This guide breaks down where to surf in Lombok, how the island's breaks work, and how to plan a proper surf trip around conditions, access, and local knowledge so you can spend less time guessing and more time in the water.

Types of Breaks on Lombok
Lombok offers a wide range of breaks, making it suitable for beginners through to advanced surfers.
Planning a proper surf trip here means understanding how the breaks connect, how conditions shift throughout the day, and how long it realistically takes to move between them.
South Coast: Kuta Lombok and Surrounding Breaks
The south coast, with Kuta Lombok as the main base, offers the highest concentration of accessible breaks and the most flexibility for surfers.
From Kuta, you can reach Mawi, Are Guling, Selong Belanak, and the various Gerupuk breaks within a manageable drive. This gives you the ability to adjust daily depending on swell size, wind direction, and tide.
Most breaks are accessed by scooter or private driver, typically between 15 and 45 minutes from town. This flexibility makes Kuta a practical base for longer stays or mixed-ability trips, where conditions can vary and having options matters.

Gerupuk Bay Surf Guide
Gerupuk Bay sits on Lombok's south coast but deserves its own dedicated mention. Unlike other areas that are accessed directly from shore, Gerupuk is a protected bay with multiple reef breaks reached by small local boats.
Entirely boat-accessed, each reef inside the bay responds differently to swell direction, size, and tide. That variability makes Gerupuk one of Lombok's most adaptable and reliable surf setups, capable of offering something workable across a wide range of conditions.
Some surfers choose to stay in Gerupuk village for early access, while others make day trips from Kuta Lombok depending on forecasts and swell windows.

Inside Gerupuk
Inside Gerupuk refers to the reefs positioned deeper within the bay, where the coastline offers more shelter from large swell.
These breaks tend to work best on small to medium swells and are noticeably more forgiving than the outer reefs. On smaller days, Inside Gerupuk delivers long, playful walls with manageable takeoffs, making it a popular step-up for surfers transitioning from beach breaks onto reef.
Because it is more sheltered, Inside often remains surfable when more exposed breaks around Lombok become too large or wind affected.
Best for:
Beginners progressing onto reef
Lower intermediates
Smaller swell days
Mixed ability groups

Outside Gerupuk
Outside Gerupuk refers to the more exposed reef breaks positioned closer to the mouth of the bay.
These reefs require a larger swell to properly activate and produce longer, faster walls when conditions line up. Outside Right is the most well known, offering performance-oriented surf that appeals to confident intermediate and advanced surfers.
With greater exposure comes more power. As swell builds, the waves grow heavier, currents strengthen, and positioning becomes more critical. When clean offshore winds align with solid south swell, Outside Gerupuk can deliver some of the bay’s most rewarding sessions.
Best for:
Intermediate to advanced surfers
Medium to larger swell
Clean offshore mornings

Why This Matters for Planning
The difference between Inside and Outside Gerupuk is critical when planning a Lombok surf trip.
On smaller days, surfers typically head inside. When swell builds, attention shifts to the outer reefs. Understanding this distinction helps you choose the right base, the right boat timing, and the right equipment.
Southeast Coast: Ekas Bay
Ekas sits further east and feels noticeably more remote.
The bay has two main breaks. Inside Ekas offers more consistency and suits intermediate surfers, while Outside Ekas is heavier and more technical, requiring experience and confidence. Boat access is required for the outer reef.
Travel time from Kuta Lombok is usually around one and a half to two hours, so most surfers plan full day trips rather than quick checks.

Southwest Coast: Bangko Bangko - Desert Point
This is Lombok’s most demanding break.
Home to Desert Point, the southwest coast is highly tide sensitive and dependent on the right swell and wind combination. When conditions align, the waves can be exceptional. When they do not, there are very few alternative options nearby.
Because of this, most surfers plan visits to this zone around forecasted swell windows rather than using it as a long term base.
Key Surf Spots in Lombok
Desert Point (Bangko-Bangko)
Break: Reef point
Direction: Left
Skill level: Advanced only
Desert Point is one of the longest and most technical left hand barrels in the world, a reef point reserved for surfers who are already comfortable in serious tube riding conditions. On the right swell, it reels for hundreds of meters down the reef, linking multiple barrel sections with almost no room for error.
The wave breaks over very shallow reef and is extremely tide sensitive, shifting from flat to world class as the swell and tide align. Low to mid tide is generally preferred when it is working, but as the water drains off the reef, the wave becomes faster, hollower, and far less forgiving of any mistake. This is not a wave for experimenting or pushing beyond your ability. Strong positioning, committed paddles, and confidence in heavy barrels are required.
Accommodation around Bangko Bangko is basic but functional, with simple homestays, surf camps, and local warungs close to the break. Most surfers time visits around specific swell windows rather than settling in long-term, given how fickle and condition-dependent the wave can be.
Mawi Beach
Break: A frame reef
Direction: Left and right
Skill level: Intermediate to advanced
Mawi is a consistent A frame reef break that funnels south swell into punchy lefts and rights, making it one of the south coast’s most reliable options for intermediate and advanced surfers. On smaller days, the right offers fast, rippable walls with the occasional barrel, while the left becomes heavier and more powerful as the swell builds.
The wave breaks over sharp coral and is highly tide dependent. Higher tides soften the wave and make it more manageable for surfers stepping up from beach breaks, while mid tide produces steeper takeoffs and thicker sections, particularly on the inside. At lower tides, the reef becomes more exposed, and mistakes are less forgiving, so confidence and control are essential.
Tip: catch a boat from Selong Belanak if you don't want to trek the road.
Gerupuk Bay
Break: Multiple reef and beach breaks
Directions: Lefts and rights
Skill level: All levels
Gerupuk is the main surf hub of south Lombok, a wide bay containing several distinct reef breaks that cater to a broad range of abilities. Inside Gerupuk offers softer, slower waves that work well for beginners and lessons, while Don Don provides a fatter peak that becomes more defined when the swell picks up.
Further out in the bay, the outer reefs break in deeper water with more speed and power, producing steeper drops and longer walls suited to confident intermediate and advanced surfers. All of the breaks in Gerupuk are accessed by boat, and sessions are typically arranged through local boat drivers or surf schools who select the appropriate reef based on conditions and experience level. Local knowledge can often help in these areas.
Selong Belanak
Break: Beach
Direction: Lefts and rights
Skill level: Beginner to intermediate
Selong Belanak is Lombok’s go to beginner beach break, a wide crescent of sand that turns incoming swell into soft, rolling peaks with plenty of room to spread out. The fully sandy bottom, gentle wave shape, and mellow shorebreak make it ideal for first timers learning to paddle, pop up, and ride straight in, as well as early intermediates starting to trim along the face.
Most sessions here happen on foamies and funboards, with local instructors lining the beach and board rentals easy to arrange on the spot. Even when bigger swell hits the south coast, the bay bends and filters the energy so the inside stays manageable, especially on mid to high tide and in the morning when the wind is lighter.
Are Guling
Break: Reef
Direction: Right, occasional left
Skill level: Intermediate to advanced
Are Guling is a quieter bay near Kuta that offers both a right and a left over reef, with the right the main draw for most surfers. On the right swell the right lines up into a long, playful wall with sections for carves and the odd barrel, while the left tends to be shorter, faster, and more hollow.
The reef here is sharp and the wave works best from low to mid tide, so it is recommended for confident intermediates and advanced surfers rather than absolute beginners. Currents and exposed coral are part of the package, so reading the channel, timing the paddle out, and respecting changing conditions are all important.
Ekas Bay
Break: Reef
Direction: Left and right
Skill level: Intermediate to advanced
Ekas Bay on the southeast coast holds two main reef setups, Inside Ekas and Outside Ekas, giving a nice spread from approachable to more serious. Inside Ekas breaks over a very deep reef and is slower and fatter, serving up long, cruisy walls that are perfect for confident beginners and intermediates working on turns without worrying too much about hitting the bottom.
Outside Ekas sits further out and feels more like a step up, with heavier, steeper sections and more water moving around the lineup when the swell is solid. Both waves are typically accessed by boat, with local guides and surf camps arranging transfers out to whichever reef is best suited to the day’s conditions and your ability.
