A village beneath
Mount Rinjani
Sembalun sits high in the foothills of Mount Rinjani, surrounded by rolling valleys, farmland, and some of Lombok's most dramatic mountain scenery. Cooler than the coast and far quieter than the island's beach towns, it's a place where sunrise hikes, village life, and open landscapes replace surf breaks and beach clubs.
While many travelers only pass through on their way to Mount Rinjani, Sembalun deserves far more than a quick stop. Whether you're hiking Pergasingan Hill, visiting local strawberry farms, or simply waking up to mountain views, it's one of the most rewarding places to slow down and experience a completely different side of Lombok.
Sembalun remains one of the island's most unique destinations, offering fresh mountain air, spectacular scenery, and a peaceful atmosphere that feels worlds away from the coastline.

EXPERIENCES
What to do in Sembalun
01
Hike Mount Rinjani
Sembalun is the main starting point for Mount Rinjani, Indonesia's second highest volcano. Whether you're hiking to the crater rim or tackling the full summit trek, this is where the adventure begins. Even if you don't plan to climb, watching trekkers set off each morning is part of what gives Sembalun its unique atmosphere.
02
Visit Bukit Selong Viewpoint
Bukit Selong is one of Sembalun's most iconic viewpoints, overlooking patchwork rice fields framed by the surrounding mountains. Visit at sunrise or in the late afternoon for the best light, and don't miss the short walk to the colorful viewing platforms at the top.
03
Explore the Sembalun Valley
The best way to experience Sembalun is by exploring the valley at your own pace. Drive through quiet mountain roads, pass local farms and villages, and stop at scenic viewpoints along the way. Around every corner, you'll find another reason to slow down and take in the landscape.
04
Visit a Strawberry Farm
Thanks to Sembalun's cool mountain climate, the valley is home to some of Lombok's best strawberry farms. During the growing season, you can pick your own strawberries, enjoy fresh local produce, and experience a side of the island that feels completely different from the coast.
05
Enjoy the Mountain Cafés
Sembalun is home to a growing collection of cafés and restaurants with incredible mountain views. Whether you're stopping for a coffee after sunrise or enjoying lunch overlooking the valley, it's one of the best places on Lombok to slow down and soak up the scenery.
06
Chase Nearby Waterfalls
Sembalun is a great base for exploring some of East Lombok's most beautiful waterfalls. Just a short drive from the village, waterfalls like Mangu Sakti offer turquoise pools, lush jungle scenery, and a refreshing break after a morning of exploring the valley or hiking nearby trails.

DIRECTIONS
Getting to Sembalun
A highland valley at the foot of Mount Rinjani, roughly 2.5 to 3 hours from Lombok International Airport.
✈️
From Lombok Airport (LOP)
The most direct route, 2.5 to 3 hours east by private transfer. Cost around 600,000 to 800,000 IDR round trip. The drive itself is part of the experience, rice fields, traditional villages, and mountain views the whole way.
🚢
Fast boat from Bali
Fast boat operators run direct services from Bali to Bangsal Harbour or the Gili Islands, then it's a further drive east to Sembalun. Allow a full day for this journey, longer than going straight through the airport.
🛵
Getting around from Sembalun
There is no reliable public transport in the village. Scooter hire and private drivers are available locally for day trips to Pergasingan Hill, Bukit Selong, or the Rinjani trailheads. Confirm with your homestay if you are not confident on mountain roads.
LOCAL TIPS
