OVERVIEW

A Living Sasak Village

Sade Village is a traditional Sasak settlement in Central Lombok, home to around 700 people living in bale tani, bamboo walled houses with thatched roofs and clay floors polished with cow dung as a traditional method of pest control. It sits right on the main road between the airport and Kuta, making it one of the easiest cultural stops to fit into a South Lombok day.

WHY VISIT

More Than a Photo Stop

Sade is a living, working village, not a museum or a staged set. Around 700 people still call it home, and a visit is really a walk through how Sasak life has been organized for generations. The bale tani houses are built from bamboo and thatch, with floors made from packed earth treated with cow dung, a practical method that keeps the floor cool, firm, and naturally resistant to insects. Some houses still hold rice

barns with distinctive pointed roofs, built apart from the main house to protect the harvest.

Weaving here is not just a craft, it is closely tied to identity. Sasak women traditionally learn ikat and songket techniques from childhood, and a single songket textile can take anywhere from two weeks to several months to complete depending on its complexity. Watching a weaver work the loom, and buying directly from the people who made it, is one of the more meaningful exchanges you can have on a short visit. A local guide, hired on site for a tip rather than a fixed fee, can also walk you through the customs and family structures that still shape daily life in the village today.
