Nipah Beach is the kind of place that experienced Lombok travellers keep to themselves. Tucked along the north coast beneath a dramatic backdrop of coconut-covered hills, it's a working fishing beach first and a tourist destination a distant second, which is precisely what makes it so special.
The beach itself is a wide arc of white sand bordered by dense coconut groves that reach almost to the waterline. Traditional jukung fishing boats are hauled up on the sand at low tide, and the local fishermen who work this bay have been doing so for generations. The water here is remarkably clear, the north coast is sheltered from the Indian Ocean swell that pounds the south, so the sea stays calm and the visibility stays exceptional.
There are no beach clubs, no rows of sun loungers and no hawkers. There is a small warung or two serving cold drinks and fresh fish, and there is the ocean, warm, clear and almost entirely yours. For travellers who have already done the south coast circuit and are looking for something genuinely off the beaten track, Nipah Beach is the answer.

What to do at Nipah Beach

Snorkel the reef
The north coast's sheltered conditions create exceptional underwater visibility at Nipah. Rocky headlands at each end shelter good coral gardens and reef fish. Bring your own mask and fins, nothing is available for hire. Best visited in the morning before the tide shifts.

Swim in the bay
Protected from the Indian Ocean swell by Lombok's northern headlands, the water at Nipah is calm, warm and remarkably clear year-round. Wade out and you can see the sandy bottom clearly even at depth. One of the best swimming beaches on the entire island for pure water quality.

Watch the fishing boats
Nipah is a working fishing beach and the daily rhythm of the local fishermen is part of what makes it special. Early morning sees the fleet heading out; mid-afternoon sees them returning with the day's catch. The brightly painted jukung boats drawn up on the white sand make for some of the best photography on the north coast.

Walk the coconut grove
The dense coconut plantation behind the beach is worth exploring. The trees are tall and old, the light filters through beautifully in the late afternoon, and the contrast between the deep green grove and the white sand and turquoise water beyond is genuinely extraordinary.

Eat fresh fish
The small warung at Nipah Beach serves the freshest fish you'll find anywhere on Lombok it came out of the water that morning. A simple grilled fish with rice and sambal, eaten at a plastic table with your feet in the sand and nobody else around, is one of those purely Lombok experiences that's hard to replicate anywhere else.

Simply do nothing
Nipah Beach is best experienced slowly. There's no agenda here, no surf school schedule, no beach club happy hour, no Instagram hotspot to queue for. Just a beautiful, unspoilt stretch of Lombok coastline that most visitors never find. Bring a book, bring sunscreen and give yourself a full afternoon.

The north coast road from Senggigi to Nipah is one of Lombok's most beautiful drives with winding coastal road with ocean views the whole way.

By private driver or GRAB
A private car from Senggigi costs around 200,000–250,000 IDR return. This is a remote beach so having your driver wait is essential, there's no transport at the beach itself.

From Lombok Airport
Allow 2–2.5 hours from LOP airport heading north through Mataram and Senggigi. Best combined with a stay in Senggigi so you can visit first thing in the morning. Transfer cost approximately 400,000–500,000 IDR.

LOCAL TIPS
- Nipah is best visited early morning, the light on the water and the boats is spectacular before 9am, and you'll often have the beach entirely to yourself.
- Bring everything you need, snacks, water, sunscreen. The warung is basic and may not always be open. Self-sufficiency is part of the Nipah experience.
- The north coast road is beautiful but narrow in places. Take it slowly on a scooter and give way to the local trucks, they know the road better than you do.
- Combine Nipah with a stop at Bangsal Harbour (the Gili Island ferry port) nearby, it's a useful logistical hub and has some good warungs for lunch.
- The water is calmer here than on the south coast but currents can develop around the headlands. Stay within the bay for swimming and be aware of the fishing boat traffic.
