Where Lombok
meets the horizon
Senggigi is the kind of place that surprises people who arrive expecting a resort strip and find instead a long, loosely-connected stretch of bays, each with its own character. The main beach curves gently along a shallow reef-protected bay where the water sits in shades of jade and grey-green, not the turquoise of the south, but beautiful in its own quieter way, especially as the sun drops behind the Bali Strait and turns Gunung Agung silhouette-black against an orange sky.
Unlike the south coast beaches which require more effort to reach, Senggigi is easily accessible from the airport and Mataram, making it the natural base camp for many visitors. There are proper restaurants, accommodation at every price point, money changers, tour operators and a handful of beach bars, yet it never feels overdeveloped. The pace is slow, the vendors are light-touch, and outside peak season it's genuinely quiet.
The coastline extends several kilometres in both directions from the town centre. Heading north the bays become progressively more secluded, Mangsit, Kerandangan, and beyond towards the Gili boat departure point at Bangsal. Each has slightly different character: some with darker volcanic sand, some with small coral gardens just offshore. It rewards wandering.

EXPERIENCES
What to do at Sengiggi
01
Sunset watching
Senggigi faces west, directly across the Bali Strait, and on a clear evening Gunung Agung appears as a perfect volcanic silhouette against a blazing sky. The main beach and the clifftop Pura Batu Bolong temple are both exceptional spots. Arrive 30 minutes early to choose your position.
04
Explore north to Mangsit
Head north along the coast road past the main town and the bays become progressively quieter. Mangsit beach is just 3 km away and significantly more peaceful. The road itself is beautiful, cliffs, coconut palms, and glimpses of turquoise water. A scooter is the ideal way to explore.
02
Snorkeling the reef
There's accessible reef fringing the headlands at both ends of the main bay. Bring your own gear or rent from beach vendors. Visibility is best in the morning before the wind picks up. The reef at Kerandangan to the north is arguably the better of the two.
Senggigi has the best concentration of restaurants in west Lombok. Several beachfront spots grill fresh fish caught the same morning. Look for the modest local warungs set back from the beach strip, they're often better value and quality than the tourist-facing restaurants on the main drag.
05
Eat fresh seafood
03
Visit Pura Batu Balong
The small Hindu sea temple perched on a black rock promontory just south of the main strip is one of Lombok's most photographed landmarks. Entry is free but a sarong is required (available to borrow at the gate). It's particularly atmospheric at sunset and during ceremonial days.
06
Day trip base
Senggigi's central location makes it the best base for exploring northwest Lombok. Gili Trawangan is 45 minutes by fast boat from nearby Bangsal. The Senaru crater rim of Rinjani, Pusuk Monkey Forest, and traditional Sasak villages are all within a 90-minute drive.

DIRECTIONS
Getting to Sengiggi
Senggigi is on the west coast, approximately 12 km north of Mataram and 25 km from Lombok International Airport.
🛵
By scooter - scenic & recommended
The most flexible way to explore. Scooters are widely available for hire in Senggigi town from around 70,000–100,000 IDR per day. The coast road north towards Mangsit and Bangsal is one of the most scenic short rides on the island.
🚕
By private driver
A private car from the airport to Senggigi costs around 200,000–300,000 IDR. Recommended for arrival with luggage or if you plan to use it as a base for multi-day trips. Many hotels can arrange a driver for day trips.
🚗
By Taxi or Ride app
Blue Bird taxis and Grab operate in the Mataram–Senggigi corridor and are reliable. Metered Blue Bird from Mataram to central Senggigi is typically 50,000–80,000 IDR depending on traffic.
LOCAL TIPS
- The main beach gets busiest between 10am and 3pm. Arrive early morning or late afternoon for a more relaxed experience.
- Senggigi has ATMs and money changers, stock up here before heading to more remote south coast beaches where cash is essential..
- Sunset at Pura Batu Bolong is the signature Senggigi experience. Arrive by 5:30pm to secure a good spot, it can draw a crowd in peak season
- The beach vendors are present but generally not pushy. A polite "tidak, terima kasih" (no, thank you) is always respected.
- If the main Senggigi bay feels too busy, 10 minutes north by scooter brings you to noticeably quieter coves

The cheapest option. Bemos run from Sweta terminal in Mataram to Senggigi for a few thousand rupiah but can be slow and infrequent, especially after midday. Not recommended with luggage.
