Lombok's home of the

first wave

Selong Belanak is where most people catch their first wave in Lombok and for good reason. Its long, gently curving bay produces consistent, mellow waves that roll in slowly and break predictably, making it the island's undisputed home of beginner surfing. On any given morning you'll see dozens of learners wobbling to their feet under the patient guidance of local instructors from the surf schools that line the beach.

But Selong Belanak is more than a surf classroom. The beach itself is genuinely beautiful, a wide arc of pale sand backed by green hills, with fishing boats anchored in the sheltered bay and a backdrop of islands on the horizon that makes every drone shot look like a postcard. The aerial view from above the headland is one of the most recognisable images in all of Lombok.

The vibe here is relaxed and local. The warungs along the beach serve cold drinks, fresh coconuts and simple Indonesian food at fair prices. There's no pretension, just good waves, good people and the kind of unhurried atmosphere that makes you want to stay longer than you planned.

EXPERIENCES

What to do at Selong Belanak

01

Take a surf lesson

Selong Belanak has the best beginner conditions in Lombok bar none. A two-hour lesson with a local instructor costs around 150,000–250,000 IDR and includes board hire. Hary Surf School, Tom & Jerry and Arya Surf House are all well-regarded beach operators.

04

Climb the headland

The western headland has a rough track to the top that takes about 20 minutes. The reward is one of the most photographed views in South Lombok, the full sweep of the bay below, the offshore islands on the horizon, and on a clear day the coastline stretching east toward Kuta.

02

Hire a board & go solo

Experienced surfers can hire a longboard or foamie from any of the beach shacks from around 100,000 IDR per day. The wave at Selong Belanak is a slow left-hander that's also suitable for intermediate surfers on the right tide.

The row of warungs at the back of the beach is a highlight in itself. Arya Surf House does a solid nasi campur and cold Bintang. Most places serve fresh grilled fish, mie goreng and cold coconuts. Lunch for two costs around 80,000–120,000 IDR honest, delicious, no tourist markup

05

Eat fresh fish

03

Walk the full bay

The beach stretches for over a kilometre. Walk to the far eastern end where the fishing fleet moors and the crowds thin out completely. It's a completely different atmosphere from the surf school end, quieter, more local, and worth the 15-minute stroll.

06

Watch the sunsets

Selong Belanak faces roughly west, making it one of the best sunset beaches on the south coast. The combination of the curved bay, the silhouette of fishing boats at anchor and the warm evening light produces spectacular photography conditions from around 5:30pm.

LOCAL TIPS

- The best surf conditions are typically 7–10am before the onshore wind picks up. Arrive early for glassy waves and empty lineups.

- Selong Belanak faces the Indian Ocean swell directly, always check the surf report before visiting if you're an intermediate or advanced surfer. Small days are perfect for beginners; bigger days bring stronger currents.

- Bring cash, there are no ATMs at the beach. There is one ATM located in the village but just in case, always make sure you're carrying enough cash for the day.

- The offshore islands visible from the headland are reachable by boat, ask at the beach if anyone is running day trips across.

- Combine Selong Belanak with Mawun Bay on the same day,  they're just 10 minutes apart and completely different in character. Surf in the morning at Selong, swim in the afternoon at Mawun.

Intermediate to advanced surfers can catch a boat from Selong Belanak to Mawi Beach which take approximately 10-15 mins
