Where the coastline

takes your breath away

Mawun Bay is the kind of beach that makes you understand why people fall in love with Lombok. Tucked between two dramatic green headlands on the south coast, its wide arc of fine white sand curves around water that shifts from pale turquoise at the shore to deep cobalt further out.

Unlike Kuta's more developed beach strip, Mawun remains beautifully quiet, there are a handful of small warungs (local food stalls) at the back of the beach and a few rows of sun loungers that belong to the warungs, no hawkers, no noise. Just the sound of waves and the occasional fishing boat passing the headland.

The bay's sheltered shape means the water is usually calm and ideal for swimming, even when bigger swell is running on the exposed breaks nearby. The headlands on either side are worth climbing for the views, particularly the western one, which gives you a classic panorama of the full bay and the rolling hills behind it.

EXPERIENCES

What to do at Mawun Beach

01

Swimming & floating

The sheltered bay creates consistently calm, clear conditions perfect for swimming. The water is warm year-round and shallow enough near the shore to be safe for all ages. Come early morning for glassy, mirror-flat conditions.

02

Climb the headlands

Both headlands flanking the bay have rough tracks to their peaks. The western headland is the better of the two, from the top you get a sweeping view of the full bay and the rolling green hills behind. Allow 20–30 minutes each way.

03

Snorkelling the rocks

Around the base of both headlands, rocky reef areas shelter good coral and small reef fish. Bring your own mask and fins, nothing is available for hire at the beach. Best visibility is in the morning before afternoon wind picks up.

04

Beginner surfing

On days with small south swell, Mawun produces gentle, rolling waves suitable for beginners. It's not a serious surf break,  for that, head to Grupuk or Mawi, but it's a lovely introduction to the water on the right day.

05

Sunset watching

Mawun faces roughly southwest, making it one of the south coast's best sunset beaches. The combination of the headlands framing the horizon and the usually calm evening conditions make for stunning golden-hour photography.

06

Eat at the warungs

A small row of family-run warungs sits at the back of the beach serving fresh grilled fish, cold coconuts, nasi goreng and cold Bintang. Nothing fancy, just honest local food at honest local prices, with your feet in the sand.

By private driver

A private car from Kuta costs around 150,000–250,000 IDR return. Ask your driver to wait, there are no taxis to flag down at the beach itself. Book through your accommodation.

🚗

LOCAL TIPS

- Arrive before 9am to have the beach almost entirely to yourself, it gets busier mid-morning.

- There is no ATM near Mawun. Bring enough cash for food, parking (around 5,000 IDR) and anything else you need.

- The road to Mawun passes through some of Lombok's most beautiful countryside, slow down and enjoy it. The views over the rice fields approaching from the east are spectacular.

- Combine Mawun with Selong Belanak on the same day, they're only 10 minutes apart and completely different in character.

- Strong offshore wind can develop in the afternoon between June–August. Morning visits give the best swimming and photography conditions.
